San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge 20th Annual Migration Celebration
4/13/2014: DESCO biologists volunteered at the 20th Annual Migration Celebration at the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. This event was a great opportunity for families to get out of the city and take their kids outside to learn about the world around them. Boy Scouts, Junior Naturalists, school groups, and families attended the event eager to learn and play outside. Over the weekend 1,665 guests visited the Refuge, breaking the record for the 20-year history of the event.
The weather was perfect despite the prediction of rain and there was just enough wind to keep the mosquitos at bay! Arthur Perkins taught kids how to use a microscope to look at insects. Chris Little and Roman Mayo guided guests along the live oak trail pointing out birds and poison ivy, and Ally Altemose worked with kids making fish prints! The fish prints were certainly messy but it was fun to work with the kids and share some facts about sea stars and flounder while they created their fishy masterpieces.
