American Burying Beetle

1/25/2017: Justin Rowland and Chris Little visited the St Louis Zoo in order to gain handling experience of the federal endangered American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) in order to obtain a section 10(a)1(A)permit under the Endangered Species Act. Dr. Bob Merz, Zoological Manager, Invertebrates, and his staff at the St Louis Zoo Insectarium provided wonderful discussion and knowledge about the American burying beetle. It’s geographical range includes the Midwestern United States, Texas, and Rhode Island. The Saint Louis Zoo has been an active component in the conservation of the American burying beetles. DESCO can help you determine if your project area requires ABB presence/absence surveys, planning, or permitting and can facilitate compliance with agency requirements, if necessary.
