DESCO Volunteers Lead Students in Galveston Bay
Foundation’s National Estuaries Week Activity Day
9/26/15: Gary Kowalski
(DESCO) and Ally Altemose (DESCO) along with GBF, TCEQ, TPWD, Boeing, and Citgo
volunteers led a group of 70 Alief High School students in various restoration
projects for the Sweetwater Property as part of National Estuaries Week
Activity Day. Gary assisted the volunteers and students who all worked as a
team preparing and transporting the 40 lb. sacks of oyster shells for the reef
construction. Students planted marsh grass (Spartina
alterniflora) under the supervision of Ally and Dr. Jan Culbertson (TPWD).
While laboring in the muddy water students were taught about the importance of
marsh grass to fish and invertebrates, for erosion control, and to people and
property. Volunteers and students alike were energized by the enthusiasm of the
beautiful weather, GBF staff, and volunteers.
